To Spook or Not To Spook
I loooove Halloween. Fact. Love dressing up, love making all of the cakes and cookies, love decorating the house, love seeing all the little trick-or-treaters. On the other hand, I’m not a fan of anything too scary. My Halloween celebrations are definitely more “Casper the Friendly Ghost”, and less “Texas Chain Saw Massacre”.
For this blog post “bake” (not technically baked) we set out to do something that was very kiddy friendly, but we’re not sure we quite succeeded as some of the “friendly faces” look quite spooky. Whether you like your Halloween sweet or spooky these super easy treats will look great on your party buffet table.
Have fun “treat”ing.

Rice Krispie Treats Spooky Faces
Prep time: 15 minutes Start to finish: 3 hours
Makes 10 faces
Ingredients
50g rice krispies
30g butter
100g marshmallows
Halloween sprinkles (optional)
Topping
150g white chocolate (not chocolate chips)
Cocoa powder (for dusting)
Make Rice Krispie Treats
1)Pour rice krispies into a large bowl.
2) Place marshmallows and butter in a microwave safe bowl (ensure that there are a couple of inches between the top of the marshmallows and the rim of the bowl).
3) Microwave marshmallows/butter for 1 and a half minutes.
4) Pour melted mixture on top of rice krispies, add sprinkles, and mix until all of the marshmallow mix evently coats the rice krispies.
5) Turn the rice krispie mixture onto a cookie tray lined with baking paper.
6) Press and shape the mixture until you have a half inch thick (almost :)) rectangle.
7) Cover with cling film and leave to set. (This takes three hours at room temperature, or 1 hour in the refrigerator)
Making the Faces
1) Once rice krispie mix is set , using a knife or pointy spatula, cut out skull shapes.
(We made large teardrops and cut the point off to square the jawline)
2) Push a toothpick about three quarters of the way into each shape.
3) Break white chocolate into the pre cut squares, and microwave for 1 minute.
4)Mix white chocolate. (As you mix, the residual heat will melt any left over chunks)
5) Using your toothpicks, dip the rice krispie faces into your chocolate. Use a teaspoon to drizzle the chocolate over the shapes if this helps you achieve a more even coating.
6) Place the chocolate covers faces back onto your cookie tray.
7) Put the cookie tray in the freezer for 20 minutes to set the chocolate.
8) Once the chocolate is set, use a small brush dipped in cocoa powder to finish your faces. Brush on cocoa powder to create eyes, hollow out the jawline, and create a mouth.
Leftovers
Break the leftover strips of rice krispie off-cuts into small chunks, and drizzle with your left over chocolate.
Tip: Adding liquid (food colouring) to white chocolate makes it clump. To make your white chocolate fluid again add a few drops - about half a teaspoon- of vegetable oil.
